Staffordshire has a population of just over 1 million, living and working in a county mixing urban centres and rural areas.
Manufacturing and traditional industries are still a large part of employment in the county, greater than is typical for the rest of Great Britain. Over 21% of all employees work in manufacturing compared with just over 13% for England.
Rates of unemployment are generally low across the area – the highest levels being in Cannock and Stoke-on-Trent.
Stoke-on-Trent has the largest population centre within the area, also representing the largest local labour market with about 80,000 jobs in 2004. The biggest growth areas in terms of employment are predicted to be Construction, Child & Adult Care and Healthcare.
A wide range of education and learning providers spans the county including two universities, nine colleges and a range of private training providers. These include some of the smallest institutions nationally to one of the largest.
