shopshireShropshire has a total population of 441,498 in a predominantly rural area with urban concentrations in Telford and Shrewsbury and several market towns.

Unemployment is not a major factor in the area, which is below the national and regional average. However, over 84,000 workers have not yet achieved a level 2 qualification with 44% of those employed in manufacturing and the wholesale and retail sectors.

A high percentage of young people enter Higher Education – 28% form Shropshire and 20% from Telford and Wrekin, but a lower than average percentage of adults participate in HE.

Demand for adult skills is increasing and areas of future growth are predicted to include Retail, Health and Care and Construction.
