Over the last two decades employment in public administration has experienced a steady decline, both regionally and nationally, with the rate of decline in the West Midlands exceeding the average for England and Wales during the 1990’s. A further net reduction in line with the national average is projected to 2012;
The occupational profile of the sector is heavily weighted towards professional, associate professional and technical, together with administrative and technical occupations, broadly reflecting national patterns;
The sector is characterised by a significantly higher proportion of employees with NVQ Level 3 or above than the average for all sectors in the Region and a much lower proportion with no qualifications. Virtually all employers undertake some form of workforce training;
Relative concentrations of employment in the sector are located in Wolverhampton and Telford and Wrekin, although the highest absolute numbers employed are located in Birmingham.
